HOW COMMON IS TEEN DEPRESSION AND TEEN ANXIETY?

When discussing student anxiety and student depression, you may be shocked to learn that both mental illnesses are common in teenagers. Studies show anxiety disorders are the most common mental health issue affecting teenagers. Nearly 1 in 3 adolescents will meet the criteria for some form of anxiety disorder by age 18. Regarding teen depression, both depression and bipolar disorder affect 14.3% of youth aged 13-17.

Regarding gender differences, data states that adolescent girls are more than twice as likely to experience depression than boys, 15.9% vs 7.7%. Additionally, there are anxiety and mood disorders that are more prevalent in adolescent girls than boys:

  • Social phobia: 11.2% females, 7.0% males
  • Specific phobia: 22.1% females, 16.7% males
  • Panic disorder: 2.6% females, 2.0% males
  • PTSD: 8.0% females, 2.3% males
  • Separation anxiety: 9.0% females, 6.3% males

WHAT CAUSES ANXIETY AND DEPRESSION IN TEENS?

There is no one overriding factor that causes student anxiety and student depression. These conditions are a result of a multitude of factors. One factor is a family history of depression and anxiety or having family members currently struggling with either disorder. Another major factor is the teen’s environment and the presence of abuse, neglect, poverty, and bullying in their lives. Thirdly, teens are more vulnerable to stress and anxiety because of the rapid growth and evolution of the brain and brain structure.

WHAT ARE THE SIGNS OF DEPRESSION AND ANXIETY IN THE CLASSROOM?

Spotting the signs of depression and anxiety in the classroom can be difficult. As stated, teenagers undergo massive transformations in both body and the brain. Michael Panzeca – Program Manager

Michael has +40 years of experience dedicated to the field of mental health and addiction. He has played a crucial role in developing programs for various nationally recognized treatment centers in the US and in the creation of the Adolescent Wellness Academy. Alongside his expertise, Michael adds a touch of creativity and humor to program design, drawing from his side profession as a stand-up comedian.

Michael passionate about working with parents and teens. He connects with them in a deeper level, able to be candid and compassionate at the same time.

Michael is a Certified Addiction Counselor from the International Certification & Reciprocity Consortium. He’s also trained in Gestalt Therapy and has a certification from The Cincinnati Gestalt Institute.  

Dr. Carlos Satulovsky – Medical Director

Dr. Carlos Satulovsky is a board-certified psychiatrist and has over 30 years of experience in the medical field. He graduated from Facultad De Ciencias Medicas/Universidad Nacional. He is affiliated with medical facilities North Shore Medical Center.  

Jenn Jacoby LMHC – Clinical Director

Jenn is a highly qualified mental health professional with a Master’s Degree and credentials as a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC). Jenn is not only a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional (CCTP) but also holds certification in Child and Family Studies.

Jenn’s extensive training includes being a Certified Trainer by DJJ for Trauma Responsive and Caring Environment, expertise in Aggression Replacement Training (ART), Impact of Crime, Thinking for a Change, Living in Balance, Cannabis Youth Treatment, Coping with Stress: A CBT Program for Teens with Trauma, Adolescents Coping with Depression, Motivational Interviewing, Protective Action Response, and being a Certified Peer Reviewer for Monitoring and Quality Improvement (MQI).
